Introduction:

In the fall of 2019, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, a couple was charged with felony neglect of a dependent. It is alleged that in July of 2013, Michael and Kristine Barnett rented their adopted disabled 9 1/2 year old daughter an apartment in a seedy part of town then moved the rest of their family to Canada, never to see Natalia again.

Michael and Kristine Barnett went on a media tour with the unreal story claiming that the girl they adopted in 2010, Natalia Grace, was actually a 30 year old sociopath masquerading as a child and a career con artist from Ukraine who tried to kill them several times. Among the bizarre, wild, ripped-from-a-movie-script accusations they've made against Natalia (who was 6-7 years old at the time):

Kristine said Natalia put bleach in Kristine's coffee.
Kristine said Natalia put Windex in Kristine's coffee.
Michael said Natalia put Pine-Sol in Kristine's coffee.
Kristine said she saw Natalia attack a baby boy on a baby monitor.
Kristine said Natalia was jumping out of moving cars.
Kristine said Natalia dragged Kristine into an electric fence.
Kristine said Natalia came after Kristine with a butcher knife.
Kristine said Natalia was diagnosed as a psychopath and sociopath.
Kristine said Natalia was hearing voices.
Michael and Kristine said Natalia had schizophrenia.
Kristine said Natalia was smearing bodily fluids on the walls.
Michael and Kristine said Natalia stood over them holding sharp objects while they were sleeping.
Michael said Natalia told them she was trying to kill them.
Michael and Kristine said Natalia would make statements and draw pictures saying she wanted to kill family members, roll them up in a blanket and put them in the backyard.
Michael said Natalia put clear thumb tacks on their stairs.
Michael said Natalia smeared blood on their mirrors.
Michael said Natalia threw their sons toys/homework into the highway to make them run out and get hit by a car.
Michael and Kristine said Natalia had pubic hair.
Michael and Kristine said Natalia had a menstrual cycle and hid the clothing in her closet and/or trash (did they bother to get an estradiol test (E2) or a progesterone hormonal profile done that would prove this claim?)
Michael and Kristine claimed that they had a person speak Ukrainian to Natalia, and she did not understand the language.

ZERO evidence has been provided to the public that supports the Barnett's outrageous claims.

Did they report this "adult masquerading as a child" to the police?
Did they file police reports?
Did they press charges against her?
Did they file a restraining order against her?
Did they file a lawsuit against the adoption agency for fraud?
Did they have her deported for coming to the USA as an adult pretending to be a minor?

The answer is a resounding NO. In all of the media interviews the Barnett's have given, neither one has shown one single police report or restraining order to help support their claims.

If the premise sounds familiar that's because it’s virtually the exact plot of 2009 big screen chiller 'Orphan', where a pig-tailed 'youngster' tries to murder her family when it's revealed she is 33.

After doing some investigating, we came across a special that aired in 1999 titled “48 Hours” The Perfect Child” about another child by the name of Caralee (now known as Sabrina Caldwell).

In July 1997, Crystal and Jesse, a couple from Georgia, USA, traveled to a Russian orphanage in the small town of Borovichi. They came across a Russian adoption agency's website and saw a photo of a blonde, blue-eyed, 9-year-old girl. The couple also adopted a 3-year-old boy they named Joshua.

As the adoption was finalized, Crystal and Jesse claim they noticed certain things about Caralee's behavior.

It was the day after Christmas in 1998 when Crystal says Caralee tried to kill her 4-year-old brother by throwing him off of a balcony. They also accused her of trying to strangle the family dog.

The adoptive parents say she had homicidal tendencies, schizophrenia, sociopathic disorder, bipolar, disorder, was hearing voices and hallucinating and claims she told them she wanted to kill them and Joshua.

Caralee says, "I went to psychiatrist after psychiatrist. And I remember Crystal saying, “Just remember, you wanted to kill Joshua.” I said, “OK. I — I will tell ’em.”

The couple admitted Caralee to a psychiatric hospital for almost four months. After treating Caralee during her stay at the psychiatric hospital, this doctor wrote, “Caralee’s behavior…was impeccable,” and that his staff perceived Crystal and Jesse as “too often cool and distant towards their daughter."

Starting to sound familiar?

The couple also accused the adoption agency of failing to disclose mental illness.

But a year-and-a-half later, the couple came to believe Caralee was so dangerous, even capable of murder, with Crystal stating, "She has so many psychological problems. … She is a danger to society."

By the winter of 1999, almost a year after the alleged incident on the deck, Crystal and Jesse decided to bring Caralee back to Russia, dropped her off inside a locked psychiatric hospital and left her there. Crystal and Jesse never went back to get her. And shortly after they left, the couple annulled the adoption in early 2000.

She was eventually rescued by a case worker and brought back to the United States. Then in 2002, Sabrina was adopted by a new family in North Carolina, where she remained until she graduated from high school.

In 2008, Sabrina volunteered for the nonprofit Mercy Ships and spent two years providing medical care to underprivileged people in Africa.

When she returned home in 2010, she got a job in a hospital and, at church, she met math teacher Phil Caldwell.

The two got married in 2014 and now have three lovely daughters, and a son.

Today, Caralee, now known as Sabrina, is happily married with 4 children, living in North Carolina. Caralee AKA Sabrina Caldwell says she is not on any medication and does not suffer from any mental illness.

Some have questioned if the Barnett's may have seen that 48 Hours episode and got a few ideas of their own.

However, as more information has come to light, it has become evident that there is a lot more to this story that the Barnett's aren't sharing. From what has surfaced, it is unmistakable that this already-been-told Hollywood movie/tabloid headliner is a complex case of deceit by the Barnett's to maintain a public image and to avoid criminal charges. The Barnett's public image is seemingly nothing more than an illusion to gain money, attention and fame.

Once the Barnett's began getting worldwide attention for their genius son, they seemed to no longer have the time nor the desire to parent a child with Natalia's special needs/disabilities. They couldn't just return her though.

It seems the Barnett's first tried getting rid of her by trying to discredit Natalia's mental stability.

When that didn't work, it's alleged they came up with the plan to change her age so they could leave her ‘because she was an adult’.

The Barnett’s allegedly crafted a way to ‘dispose’ of her that wouldn’t hurt their image and public notoriety gained from being the "amazing parents" to their child prodigy son Jacob. Natalia wasn’t a daughter to them. Natalia was an inconvenience to them. They didn't need her anymore.

⦁ July 9, 2008 - Natalia Grace, age 4 1/2, is brought to USA from Ukraine and was adopted by a couple, Dyan and Gary Ciccone, in New Hampshire.

A doctor in Boston examined Natalia in 2008 when she arrived in the United States as a Ukrainian orphan. An interpreter helped the doctors communicate with Natalia during the 2008 examination.

Natalia's medical records charted the surgeries she needed and set a timetable for the operations. The Ciccones and Barnetts allegedly had copies of these records.

⦁ July 30, 2008 - Natalia Grace was evaluated at Children's Hospital Boston by Dr. David Harris, who had a Russian speaking interpreter to assist in communicating with Natalia. Dr. Harris diagnosed Natalia with kyphosis, an excessive curvature of the spine which causes hunching of the back.

Dr. Samantha Spencer, also of Children's Hospital Boston, evaluated Natalia Grace and diagnosed her with diastrophic dysplasia and associated musculoskeletal issues, including severe dysplasia of her hips, severe clubfeet and severe flexion contractures of her knees. Dr. Spencer also diagnosed Natalia Grace with scoliosis, which she noted was progressive and not responsive to bracing because of diastrophic dysplasia. Dr. Spencer noted that Natalia's musculoskeletal issues would need to be addressed within the next few years. Specifically, Dr. Spencer planned to perform surgery on Natalia's hips, followed by her knees and then her feet.

Natalia's medical records charted the surgeries she needed and set a timetable for the operations. The Ciccone's and the Barnetts had copies of these records.

Dr. Emans expected to perform a spinal fusion on Natalia within the next few years.

⦁ September 4, 2008 - Natalia's birthday. She is now either 5 years old according to her Ukrainian birth certificate dated 09-04-2003 or she is 19 years old according to the Barnett's adjusted Indiana birth certificate dated 09-04-1989.

Yet, in an article with the Indiana Daily Student dated March 28, 2011, Kristine Barnett says she used their life savings to purchase the building used for Jacobs Place with help from a local philanthropist, James D. Mann (AKA Chip Mann) of KD 102 Kirklin, LLC.

Her friend, Dawn Johns, even chimes in, “All of the stuff that’s here,” Dawn Johns said while gesturing around the room. “She brought things from her house to (Jacob’s Place). They go without things to help other people’s kids.” Dawn then began rattling off all Kristine has done to help other people’s children. “She used to run this free summer program for the sensory kids, and she sold her car one time to help families,” Dawn said.

Kristine Barnett adds, “I want people to have hope,” Kristine said. “I mean, that is why I do this. That’s why I would sell a car. That’s why I would give up my retirement. It takes an extreme effort to pull a child out of autism, but I don’t think it’s impossible, and I think every family can do it if they try.”

Umm, did the Barnett's forget about the hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money and donations? The building they said was donated they now say they used their life savings to purchase? Or did they lead people to believe they were making family sacrifices and paying for all of this out of their own pockets? Yikes!

On Jacobs Place's website, the Barnett's say they purchased the building and used a major funder's donations to renovate the building into a rec center.

But wait, there's more! Now check out Jacobs Place 2010 tax return filings. Kristine Barnett claims they spent x amount of dollars in 2009 and 2010 to perform improvements on the building which will allow for occupancy in 2011. But in one media article she says the building was donated, in another media article she says she spent her life savings to buy it. Worth noting: The Barnett's bought their house in 2008.

⦁ January 31, 2012 - A licensed clinical social worker, Susan Whitten, LCSW, wrote a letter stating Natalia and the Barnetts were seen her in office in December 2011 with the Barnetts stating Natalia was a threat to others, has harmed them, poisoned Kristine and created a cleat plan to kill their family. She was given the diagnoses of RADM ODD and schizophrenia. She goes on to state Natalia has been in the St. Vincent Stress Center 3 times and also received treatment through Community Psychological Consultants, Lennon and Associates and evaluations at Valle Vista. Ms. Whitten goes on to claim the Barnett's told her several mental health professionals (Dr. Pierson, Valle Vista, St. Vincent Stress Center & Dr. Andrew McLaren) have recommended Natalia be admitted to a residential treatment center or a state run hospital. Ms. Whitten ends her letter with a statement that it was her opinion that "Natalia should be aged well over 18".

Doctors estimate Natalia's age to be approximately 11 years old.

Ex parte means that one of the parties to a legal action is omitted from participating in the due process. In this case, it was 8 year old Natalia Grace who didn't participate.

Worth noting that the Barnett's claimed in this petition that Natalia's alleged primary care physician was Dr. Andrew McLaren of St. Vincent and her mental health professional was Susan Whitten, LCSW. Dr. Andrew McLaren's name will come up again in 2016 in the form of a letter the doctor allegedly wrote to the courts to vouch for the Barnett's and their claims that Natalia was an adult. Also worth noting the Barnett's claimed in this petition that by the courts granting their age change request, it would allow them to seek out services for Natalia that she would otherwise not have access to. In reality, by changing her age to that of an adult, the Barnett's DENIED Natalia access to much much more. She was an 8 year old little girl in 2nd or 3rd grade. As an adult, she was now denied a proper education. She was also denied all of the surgeries needed as a growing minor, which made her condition much worse and her daily life even more painful as she ages. As an adult, she can now vote in elections, apply for a drivers license, buy a gun, buy cigarettes and alcohol, gamble, get married, and if she committed a crime, be tried as an adult.

⦁ June 22, 2012 - Despite the Barnett's being informed by experts and professionals that Natalia Grace is a child & approximately 6-9 years old, Judge Gerald S. Zore from Marion County Superior Court in Indianapolis, Indiana legally declared that Natalia was born in 1989, changing her age from 8 1/2 years old to 22 1/2 years old.

⦁ July 25, 2012 - Mobile Dental Health Care Services records show that a dental x-ray was taken by Dr. Ronald Deckard. He states that, based upon the dental x-rays, Natalia was between 6 and 9 years old as of July 25, 2012. Dr. Deckard was provided a birth year for Natalia of 1989 but he did not believe that birth year to be accurate.

⦁ August 29, 2012 - A letter was sent to Judge Payne with the Indiana Department of Children's Services and to Dr. Andrew McClaren from a representative of St. Vincent Hospital regarding the issues of aging Natalia from 8 years old to 22 years old, stating it was NOT true, Natalia was NOT 22. Included were extensive medical documentation proving Natalia was indeed a minor child.

⦁ August 2012 - Larue Carter Hospital contacts the Barnett's and tells them there is nothing wrong with Natalia and they don't see the need for medication or therapy, since they didn't consider her mentally unstable. The Barnett's plan to have Natalia committed, failed. Natalia was then sent to a half-way house. According to Kristine and Michael Barnett, 8 1/2 year old Natalia Grace is discharged from the secure psychiatric care in and placed under the supervision of state healthcare provider, Aspire Indiana https://www.aspireindiana.org/housing

After learning Natalia was in a half-way house with drug addicts, alcoholics, etc, Kristine called Michael and said "we have to go get her because if something happens to her, I'm famous...and if they find the daughter of 'the Kristine Barnett' dead of a drug overdose...I'm famous!".

Michael Barnett states he and Kristine Barnett helped set 8 year old Natalia up in an apartment, paid the first 3 months rent, set her up with disability, social security and food stamps. Michael Barnett states they hired a home health aid for Natalia who billed them for 260 hours.

Additionally, Michael Barnett said he and his wife would check on Natalia twice a week. Michael Barnett says Natalia lived in that apartment for a year on her own.

This is what Natalia had to say about her time in that apartment: “I was eight years old, almost nine … My landlord would take me to the gas station to get little things that I needed. And the Barnetts would give me food that they didn’t really eat, like canned food and stuff like that."

Kristine Barnett makes no mention of her disabled adopted daughter. She claims to have survived a flood, fire, poverty, hunger. She says her second baby, Wesley Barnett, was born with a disease called reflex sympathetic dystrophy, a neurological disorder that can affect every system in the body. RSD is a chronic pain condition resulting from an injury/nerve damage and I haven't found anything about it being fatal other than by being associated with opioid abuse.

⦁ After living in an apartment alone for about a year, 9 1/2 year old Natalia Grace allegedly caused problems at the Aspire Indiana property and was evicted according to Kristine Barnett. In a 10/14/19 interview with U.K. "This Morning", Michael Barnett says Natalia's lease was up so Kristine Barnett got her another apartment in Lafayette, Indiana.

⦁ July 10, 2013 - The Barnett's claim they rented and co-signed on an apartment located at 914 N 11th St Apt 1, Lafayette, IN 47904 in Tippecanoe County, for the almost 10 year old Natalia Grace, which is about an hour away from Hamilton County, Westfield, Indiana, where the Barnett's resided.

This apartment was in a very bad part of town. Natalia is left there, alone and isolated from everyone and every thing she knew in an apartment that was not scaled down for someone of her size or for her disability. The Barnett's took Natalia's walker and shoes. Gunshots ring out day and night, homeless people trash picking in the parking lot, drug deals in broad daylight, etc.

To get to the apartment, Natalia had to make her way up 4 steps from the sidewalk. Then she had to get up 5 more steps to get to the front door and unlock it from that 5th step. Then another step to through the front door, 12 more steps UP to her apartment on the 2nd floor.

It appears the Barnett's chose Lafayette because no one there would know Natalia and know she was a juvenile — thereby concealing the crime and surely, they hoped death would find Natalia, be it through murder or her falling down the stairs.

The Barnett's claim they paid for the entire first year of rent up front, enrolled her in a school at the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy (LARA) to work on her GED, and they set her up with Social Security, disability aid, food stamps, and Medicaid.

This turned out to be untrue. They abandoned her there with nobody to assist her in shopping, cooking, cleaning, hygiene, clothes, they didn't set her up with any doctors and just left her there, endangering her life and health. The electric was even shut off in the dead of summer and all of the food in the fridge went bad, leaving 8 1/2 year old Natalia scared to death.

The rest of the Barnett family (Kristine, Michael and their 3 sons) move to Waterloo, Ontario Canada a few weeks later for Jacob Barnett's education. The Barnett's say they had no further contact with Natalia once they moved to Canada.

It's clear Kristine was calling the shots and by abandoning Natalia in a 2nd floor apartment in a very bad part of a town where she doesn't know a soul, taking her walker, shoes and cell phone, not paying the electric bill, Kristine knew she was leaving Michael holding the bag and forcing him to be responsible for Natalia. It's believed Kristine never had any intentions of Michael coming to live in Canada and should anything happen to Natalia, Kristine could claim it was out of her hands because she lived in another country while Michael lived in the USA.

Dr. Kuldanek estimated Natalia's age to be approximately 13-14 years of age based upon x-rays which showed open physes within the hand and wrist as well as bilateral femurs and tibias. The doctor also found that Natalia physically appeared to be a pre-teen. Medical records show that Natalia was physically limited because of her medical condition, complained daily of lumbar and thoracic back pain, and needed a referral for a wheelchair and walker. Medical records also show that surgeries on Natalia's lower extremities and spine would be medically necessary with spinal realignment taking priority. Records show that because of the conflict between Natalia's "legal" age and her physical age, treatment was denied until the conflict could be resolved.

If you're keeping score, we have Jacob being diagnosed at age 2 with the mildest form of autism (Asperger's) but Kristine claims she's told by literally every expert that he wouldn't ever speak or tie his own shoes and they were all "baffled" when he started to talk after she used her super-dee-duper magical mommy powers to unlock his spark ie: the no-brainer thing most parents do....doing activities with your kid that your kid is actually interested in...derp.

And then Kristine claims her middle child is diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy, something never diagnosed in babies, and they're told he would probably die??

And now she's cured her nephew by simply holding him.

Not to mention her own crisis's such as a stroke, Lupus and the glaring ability to greatly exaggerate and embellish just about every single event in her life. By her reports, she is a walking Christ. It’s a wonder she doesn’t have medical schools, research facilities, and Bill Gates clamoring to replicate her healing powers.

⦁ November 8, 2019 - The defense did not respond to the prosecutors request that was filed October 11th asking Michael Barnett and Kristine Barnett for payment amounts they received, payment dates, and any other form of promised compensation for the interviews they've given regarding Natalia Grace.

Prosecutors also asked the Barnett's to produce copies of the signed contracts for their appearances and any other documents they might have provided to media outlets.

Prosecutors re-filed their request on this day.

In the state's second request for discovery filed today, prosecutors asked the Barnetts to provide the name of the Ukrainian or Russian person whom the Barnetts had speak with Natalia Grace Barnett. They also want information "possessed by the Barnetts regarding the 'traveling nurse' claimed to have been employed by the Barnetts with regard to Natalia Barnett in 2010-2013 or any time during those years."

⦁ November 27, 2019 - Michael Barnett files a Subpoena/Summons for deposition subpoena ad Testificandum of/for Natalia Barnett, Det. Brandon Davenport and Tippecanoe County Sheriff Robert Goldsmith.

⦁ December 12, 2019 - Prosecutors filed an amended probable cause affidavit based on new medical information obtained since the Barnetts were first charged. The court documents also requested the motion to change the level of the case from a Level 6 Felony to a Level 3 Felony. Prosecutors requested to add four more counts of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury.

The bodily injury, based on the affidavit, is that Natalia needs surgeries to correct musculoskeletal deformities caused by her dwarfism. Without the surgeries, Natalia's condition continues to get worse and her pain grows more intense, according to the affidavit.

When the Barnetts adopted Natalia in 2010, and they were aware of her need for surgeries, according to the affidavit. A doctor in Boston examined Natalia in 2008 when she arrived in the United States as a Ukrainian orphan. An interpreter helped the doctors communicate with Natalia during the 2008 examination, according to the affidavit.

Natalia's medical records charted the surgeries she needed and set a timetable for the operations, according to the affidavit. The Barnett's allegedly had copies of these records.

The new charges also cite dental records from 2011 and 2012 to back claims that Natalia was 8 or 9 in 2011 and between 6 and 9 in 2012, according to the affidavit. Kristine Barnett was told of Natalia's estimated age on all visits, according to the affidavit.

Michael Barnett allegedly sent a letter to Natalia's school in Westfield noting he was aware that Natalia's surgeries needed to be done in a timely manner and that she was suffering because the surgeries were delayed, according to the amended affidavit for the new charges.

If prosecutors can confirm Anna Volodymyrivna Gava's claim through DNA samples, it would end the dispute about Natalia's age, according to court documents.

This is to provide an additional layer of publicly available information and hopefully clear up some of the misinformation based on the TV show.

I’m a criminal defense attorney. I represent people accused of crimes, from murder to misdemeanors. I fight hard for all my clients and the fact that I win cases upsets people that want my clients to be convicted.

The truth is, sometimes people are falsely accused of crimes as in this case. Our client was innocent of the crimes charged. Unfortunately, some people are upset because we won.

The people upset have watched a TV show, The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and naively think they know everything there is to know about the case. They have had no part in the case, were never our client, and don’t even know me. They falsely accused me of engaging in some sort of trickery to win the case or not caring about the truth only about winning.

Actually, because I cared about the truth, we proved the facts to the courts and the prosecutors and these facts forced them to dismiss the criminal charges and eventually the entire case.

The following information is from publicly available documents.

No one likes losing and the prosecutors hate the fact they lost the case against the truth. Even the court of appeals mentioned how unhappy the prosecutors were in losing based on the law and the facts. See, the court order, page 24.

1. Was our office involved in changing the age of Natalia?

No, we were not. I don’t practice in that area of the law (adoptions, age changes, etc.). I have never met the attorney, Michele Jackson, that was involved in the age change.

2 Did Kristine Barnett have court-appointed attorneys, Public Defenders?

Yes, Kristine initially hired us but she was found to be indigent (poor) by the court. Therefore, our firm and another firm were court-appointed to represent her.

3. Did the prosecutors appeal the court’s decision to grant a motion to dismiss several charges against our client, Kristine Barnett?

Yes, the prosecutors did file an appeal and lost. They filed for transfer to the Indiana Supreme Court. The Indiana Supreme Court affirmed the lower court’s decision, effectively dealing another defeat to the prosecutors. You can read the Indiana Court of Appeals opinion by here .

4. Was there a hearing regarding changing the date of birth of Natalia?

Initially, no. It was granted based on the filing of documents by the previous attorney, Michele Jackson, (not me).

Later, there was a hearing regarding Natalia’s change of birth. Testimony was given by experts and the court determined that Natalia was an adult, affirming her 1989 date of birth. I was not involved in that case either.

5. Did the Barnetts pick the age for Natalia?

To my knowledge, no. I am unaware of any court documents or court testimony showing the Barnetts specifically requested Natalia’s age to change to 22.

6. Did the TV show/documentary, The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, reveal all the facts of the case?

No, there were many facts that were not mentioned in the documentary. Anyone that watches that TV show and thinks they know all the facts is clearly being misled.

I worked on the case for over 3 years and watching some 30-second clip of a deposition or a 3-hour TV show cannot cover all the facts.

7. Did the Law Office of Mark Nicholson represent Michael Barnett?

No, our office did not represent Michael Barnett. Attorneys Terrance Kinnard and Vincent Scott represented Michael Barnett and I was not part of their team. Nor was I part of the documentary when they were interviewed.

8. Did the DNA results prove that Anna Gava was the birth mother of Natalia Grace?

The DNA results were not independently verified, there were issues with the chain of custody and the results were inadmissible in court.

I’ve worked on cases where the State’s DNA expert claimed my client’s DNA was present. However, when the results were independently tested, it was proven my client’s DNA was not present.

Therefore, in this case, since we never had the opportunity to depose Anna Gava, I don’t know what she would have said under oath. Also, we didn’t have access to have the DNA results independently verified, so I don’t know what the true results of the DNA show.

I do know that the prosecutors didn’t call her, (the alleged mother) as a witness, which to me implies that there was something not credible about her statements and potentially the DNA results.

9. Was Anna Gava given money for claiming to be Natalia’s birth mother?

Yes, there was a report that Ana Gava was paid for her initial interview(s) claiming to be the birth mother of Natalia.

10. Was I paid by the TV show for the use of the deposition in The Curious Case of Natalia Grace?

No, I did not request nor was I offered any money.

11. Did our office provide documents for the show?

No, we did not provide documents for use in the TV show. We did not produce the show.

12. Who provided documents in the documentary?

The documents were released by the prosecutors, the court, Michael Barnett, his attorney and Natalia Grace. We did not release any documents for them to use for the show.

13. Did the X-Rays prove Natalia’s date of birth?

No, the X-Rays didn’t prove Natalia’s date of birth. Natalia suffered from a bone disorder that impacted the growth of her bones. It is absolutely false to claim that some X-ray proved her date of birth to be in 2003. The physical evidence didn’t prove that conclusion.

14. Did I claim that the prosecutors lied to the court?

Yes, in my motion to dismiss and in court I claimed the prosecutors were lying to the court and that I could prove it. You can read the public transcripts of the Motion To Dismiss Hearing on July 27, 2020, page 12, lines 17-19.

15. Did Kristine and Michael Barnett choose the new date of birth for Natalia Barnett?

No, the Barnetts did not choose the date of birth of Natalia.

16. Did police Detective Clouse tell the Barnetts to hire an attorney to re-age Natalia?

Yes, according to the police reports he wrote and public court documents. Also, see page 15 of the Defense Memo to Dismiss that law enforcement suggested Natalia be re-aged.

17. Did police Detective Clouse suggest they hire attorney Michele Jackson to re-age Natalia?

Yes, according to the police reports he wrote, and public court documents.

18. Is the original prosecutor still working for the Tippecanoe County prosecutor’s office?

No, as the writing of the post, prosecutor Jackie Starbuck was relieved of her duties. Whether it was voluntary or involuntarily I don’t know.

19. Did any attorneys for Kristine Barnett violate any rules to win the case?

No. Some people may not like the fact that we won but the law was followed and reviewed by various courts over a period of several years.

When all the facts came out, the prosecutors finally realized that they didn’t have a criminal case and filed a motion to dismiss the case.

We filed our first motion to dismiss on January 29, 2020 over three years before the prosecutors did. In other words, it took the prosecutors over three years to figure out what we knew from the start…the case should be dismissed!

20. Did the jury want to convict Kristine Barnett?

No, Kristine Barnett’s case never went to trial. The prosecutors dismissed her case due to a lack of evidence to prove their case.

21. Who represents Kristine Barnett now?

After her case was dismissed, our court appointment ended. Currently, it is not known if she has an attorney representing her.

22. Was this case about allegations of physical abuse?

No. There were no allegations of physical abuse. Therefore, the prosecutors never filed any physical abuse (battery) charges.

23. Did the prosecutor try to submit jury instructions that were contrary to the law and the facts?

Yes and the court said what they were doing didn’t make sense. Read the public transcript of the Motion To Dismiss Hearing on July 27, 2020, page 134, lines 15-19. Also, read the Dismiss for Brady Violations based on the prosecutor's withholding evidence and ignoring key facts.

24. What about those people claiming the physical evidence proves she was a child?

First, the people claiming that the physical evidence proved Natalia was a child have probably only watched the TV show and have not seen or heard all the evidence.

Second, they don’t even know what the evidence shows. They only know what they were told by someone on a TV show. Now they’re upset, making threats, false allegations and acting like they know everything about the case.

Unfortunately, some people don't want to know the truth, they can't handle the truth because they just want a conviction. They can believe what they want and say what they want without consequences.

I'm bound by the law, facts, a code of ethics and my faith in GOD. Those things helped us win this case, not lies, deceit or mistruths.

The doctor that mentioned X-Rays don’t lie, may seem like a good sound bite for the TV show. However, people lie and the doctor was not an expert on age. He was trying to violate the law and the court order. Therefore, I challenged him on his improper statements.

Ultimately, when all the facts came out, the prosecutors had to dismiss the criminal case because they had no case. The evidence just didn't support what they were trying to do. Here is a copy of the prosecutor's motion to dismiss . And here is a copy of the court's order dismissing the case.

Fascinating. Anyways I am still who I really am in real life and my work was real work of value to the community which continues .

What I have to say is that there was real trial with multiple judges and a legal process in which both sides are represented with evidence and facts not slander and libel .

In that legal process this attorney who is speaking left the case after unethical behavior called Brady violations. Whether she was fired or quit I do not know . I do know she’s making the same violations in this one sided docudrama . What is disturbing is this is happening after a sound verdict was reached by multiple courts of law after thorough review of real evidence. Natalia was a very much loved and cared for member of my family.

She was not abused by anyone in my family. Let’s get straight to these allegations . Nobody ever took a belt to Natalia and the allegations that she was “beaten” are just plain false. Any discipline of Natalia was very minimal and was not out of the bounds of normal parenting .

If anything it was overly permissive as we all felt a tremendous amount of sympathy for Natalia and loved her while she lived with us . As a parent , I have had good and bad days as a mom. There were many days raising four children I depended on the power of coffee to get me through the day for example , I was prone to getting exhaperated while cleaning , and I am certainly not going to claim I was a perfect mom . Anyone who has children knows that feeling of going to bed at night hoping you have done the right things and enough for your children on a daily basis . I am sure there were plenty of fails and some successes I had as a parent and mom but I was not abusive to my children .

If you are interested in what it was like in our house there was a sixty minutes piece about us before this highly sensationalized show . I believe it is on you tube .

Natalia had made these allegations before and they were investigated as unfounded . For example one time she ripped up her shoes then had someone call Cps to state she had on torn shoes . Cps came and did a full inspection of everything in the home and found that she had pairs of good shoes and that she lived in a clean tidy living environment . The claims were investigated and dismissed as unfounded . So living with Natalia did come with constant allegations about her treatment which I believe was to lead people away from investigating her personal behaviors which were extreme and usually of some sort of sexual or hurtful to towards others nature . So the accusations of being abused are a way to deflect what she is actively doing to hurt other people and as well they themselves hurt other people . I am used to this constant accusation by Natalia . When she was admitted to various hospitals she was checked constantly for abuse and it was not found to exist . Most of the hopsitals also noted that Natalia had a strong family support system in us as one of the assets Natlaia had in her life at that time . She has alleged abuse by anyone who has had long term contact with her as well as neighbors teachers and even children that she claims were abusive to her . In my experience they all were not abusing her .

She did spend a very minimal time in time out. This was not done in a way that rediculed her or made her suffer. She was not in timeout for a period of time beyond minutes. The time out itself was a suggestion prescribed by her therapist.

For people wondering if I have been to jail , yes . I was booked into the Tippecanoe county jail. I faced charges and these same allegations at that time . The case against me was determined to be false and there was no evidence of any harm to Natalia or abandonment of Natalia by me . It was a case that should not have been brought. I was charged with various levels of causing bodily harm to Natalia due to these allegations as was Michael Barnett. Michael faced a jury trial and was found innocent. Mike immediately testified in a pretrial at my trial. My case was dismissed. If there had been any abuse of Natalia or evidence of it , I would have been found guilty of it and I would be in jail.

The fact that these false allegations are occurring after a trial with evidence which was dismissed is disturbing . It’s like being assumed guilty after being proven innocent.

Another important thing to mention is Natalia was never “abandoned” . I did not ever leave or want to “get rid of “ Natalia. That was also covered in the trial as I was charged with abandonment.

A series of legal happenings based on Natalia’s own behaviors ,statements,and much evidence led to her being reaged at the recommendation of law enforcement. As a result she was allowed to make her own adult decisions of where to live and what to do with her life and time while living where she has. While Natalia did live independantly as an adult she had very much support from our family and care and love until she decided to make the Manns her medicaid payee and they became responsible for her medical care and her income . This was very upsetting to me at the time and I reported this to adult protective services repeatedly because I was worried sick she was possibly being exploited for their rent money. Once the Manns were her payee and Natalia was a legal adult I had no real options at my disposal to be able to help and care for her which made me physically ill from worry about that fact .

I understand compassion people have for Natalia because I had that same compassion myself . I listened to her claiming horrific levels of abuse of the family prior to us the Ciccones that ranged everywhere from sexual to physical abuse. She claimed incidents of being drug down the stairs , people tipping her over in a mattress , putting her in a locked boathouse , and beating her . When we approached the doctor to investigate these claims she immediately retracted them . It was very clear to us she had much experience with the ins and outs of CPS and social workers before ever meeting us . I do not personally believe the Ciccones were a source of abuse of Natalia. I understand that when someone is doing some of the extreme behaviors I have witnessed from Natalia it is only natural to think “she must’ve been abused “ and I believe Natalia takes advantage of that sympathy to manipulate people . I believe this because I sat through numerous hospital visits and therapy visits trying to understand and help Natalia and thinking we might be able to find the root of the issue . In the end I learned she is a sociopath . I still have not wrapped my head around that diagnosis to this day honestly and I still revert to feeling sympathy for her and hope that she will do well in life . It’s very hard for me to understand to this day what happened in our lives with Natalia or to process it .

In regards to Michael . Certainly his own mental health had been affected by us having adopted Natalia and the fact that we tried so hard to help her and could not in the end succeed at that . The deterioration of his mental health did lead to our divorce after Natalia. It is hard to describe the level of abject horror a person feels when they want to be responsible for a persons safety and well being but cannot help that person because of the persons own choices . I believe that is what he felt with Natalia . We all did . Natalia made her own choices.

He did not abuse Natalia , he tried very hard to make a good home for her and provide for her . After she was institutionalized with the electric fence incident which is a real thing and a well documented murder attempt, we had very little control over being able to care for her etc as she was in state custody . This was not a “plan to get rid of her “ . You cannot plan for someone to try to kill you .

Natalia confessed to having done this when I truly thought she was trying to throw her own self into the fence . I had no idea she was trying to hurt me until she made statements about what she was doing and why at the hospital . At the time I was very weak. I had lupus and was going through chemotherapy. So yes she could overpower me and did .

In regards to Lafayette , I was excited about the possibility of her deciding to enroll in school. I truly hoped she would become a beautician or if she did well an accountant which was what she stated her intentions of being in Lafayette were. The real facts of her being there were for the same mundane reason many people go to Lafayette which is education. Natalia was enrolled in school . They are not sensational like the word “abandoned “ , the correct words would have been “enrolled in school “ . However sensational is what sells .

Natalia found her own apartment and signed her own lease in Lafayette. As far as I know Natalia’s condition while living with us never involved an inability to use stairs . In fact she lived upstairs in our home that is where her bedroom was located . She did not need any assistance navigating the stairs . Natalia had both physical and occupational therapy at our home which we provided her , the therapists both would have noted and worked on stairs with her if she had an issue navigating them . I am 100 percent sure they tested her for any issue navigating the stairs and found none.

The Ciccone house was also a two story house . The state hospital records where she was inpatient also do not indicate any need for assistance using the stairs. While there , the state did clinical testing of her ADLs or assisted daily living skills which she passed all of. This means she was fully capable of the use of them because stairs are assessed by the testing . The state discharged her to a homeless shelter whose bedrooms were upstairs and that they deemed appropriate . Since she chose her own apartment for school I do not think Natalia had any true major issues navigating them .

I was aware she had been evicted from the Westfield apartments for solicitation of a man in the laundry room . I was not aware of her sexual advances towards a child at that time but I am not surprised that occured and I believe it is real. I also believe that could explain why Natalia wanted to leave that town before being investigated for that crime. If there’s one thing Natalia is good at it’s getting enormous enough amounts of sympathy to cover up her own outrageous behaviors .

While watching the current series I found Natalia’s entire demeanor to be quite contradictory to the deameaner I experienced from her and it was eerie watching her as if she was very well coached in how she was dressed and behaved and presented herself . This is after years of trial and I believe she has a motive for her questions of Michael. I do not believe that motive is a good one although I do think she presented herself as what a typical viewer would consider well . I do not believe that is the real Natalia who we saw in this documentary. I believe it is a mask . In order to hurt someone you need a mark and another group of people who sympathize with you at the same time , this is what I learned from living with her . Natalia will go to great lengths to hurt people but also to gain tremendous amounts of sympathy at the same time . I know because I have both been a mark of hers and also sympathized for her very much after my adoption of her while she making wild accusations against other people so I understand how the public feels. There was a time of years and years of my life I was struggling to do anything I could to help her . I could not and it has been heart breaking because on some level this has to be about what Natalia’s own identity feels she is capable of more than about abuse. Claiming abuse is the tool she uses to gain sympathy. I am not sure it is NOT the root of the issue . I believe the root of the issue is her own identity and struggling with who she is and how she fits into this world which must be difficult for her.

Fred Gill wrote a book about his own struggles with his identity as a little person which I highly recommend that anyone trying to understand Natalia and her true insecurities read . It is also what I was trying to meet him at Cracker Barrel with my entire family and Natalia about . There was no “pimping “ out of Natalia. His book was instrumental in my own understanding of what she might personally be going through and the fact that that meeting was portrayed so rediculously by this series as “pimping out” Natalia is insane. It was about a discussion of that book. A full review of the text messages and not sensational chopped up bits a pieces would have shown that. I had to really roll my eyes at that one. I’ll just say it like this anyone whose child has had a playdate with another person knows that wording of playdate is not a date . As such meeting an author with your mother who is also an author and your brothers is not pimping you out here . Sensational sure sells though and this series will do nothing but exploit sensational drama . Did Jerry Springer haunt this series ? Perhaps .

Natalia did allege abuse and basically the same things that she claims I did to her against all of her brothers , which I believe Jacob is tormented about to this day and I would love to answer because I was there. In the time I lived with him I never once saw him being abusive to his sister and I think the fact that he has to battle with his own memories and is being gaslighted that he may have been some culprit of abuse is horrific . I can tell you he was a very good brother who was patient with Natalia and always tried his utmost to help her out . For example when she was recovering from surgery for her feet she had to begin walking on them again (which she is completely capable of by the way after having full corrective surgery ) .

Jacob spent hours and hours of time standing next to her and helping her through that to make sure she was ok . He did every physical therapy exercise with her to help her . He was very compassionate towards her . Several times if she was dangerous he may have had to stand up for himself to not be hurt but he was never the “hurter” of Natalia . He loved his sister , we all did . My children did not harm Natalia .

Michael Barnett and Natalia Barnett may have the same monster but that monster is not me. That monster whether it’s mental illness sociopathy or whatever it actually is may be different for each of them. But it’s within their own psyche.

Natalia Grace Barnett released a video a year ago, before this whole drama happened.

She was trying to creat her own you tube channel.

She talks about bullying, and being a little person, and wanting to inspire people. She looks sad, to me at least, like she has already been through a lot.

It has only been viewed oddly enough by about a few hundred people.

Nobody could view this video and think that that child is 30 or even 18. No adult acts like that.

I wish I could send her a bunch of gift cards for like maybe like Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, maybe some Italian restraunt like Olive Gardens or something and a whole bunch of Dr. Pepper from like some online grocery store or something. I wish the Manns could set up some P.O. Box that people could like send letters of support to Natalia and shower her with love and gift cards, to counteract all the horrible, horrible things that these people have done. I am glad she has the Manns. Sometimes you have to go through darkness to get something bright. God is watching over her. The truth will come out.

I am a hearing impaired person who constantly suffers from marginalization and discrimination by society and through research and academic circumstances I found this case..

I´m following the case with the intrigue of the injustice that is carried out thanks to the system. Through the videos you can see that Natalia is pure heart and not a "sociopath." his maturity is premature due to all the pain she had to endure... even is painful for me to see all those comments on Internet and Youtube videos (like if everybody has the right to express their "truth universal") I really hope from deep in my heart that the case be resolved and grant natalia the life she deserves.

I hope my words are not superfluous, I just wanted to convey my support to you. who strive to give her innocence that she deserves. In my country is really it is easy to make an accusation and reach a conclusion without evidence and that really bothers me. Natalia is more innocent than the whole world and is the kind of person we should all be for the world to improve.

I hope no to bother you with everything you must bear. My regards to the family and Natalia. I will be supporting you until everything is resolved as it should be. I felt the need to leave a message for them to know that in addition to me, many people support you and want this injustice to end.

Wow, this was incredibly detailed and really helped me make sense of the case. Thank you for putting all of this together. I really am so thankful to see that after all Natalia has been through, she is with such a loving family as the man's seem to be. Praise God she was found by them. One day, I hope they can make a story about how they were brought together. I also do see Natalia as an incredibly strong and loving person through her YouTube videos. She has undoubtedly been through so much, but I am just so happy she is now with a family who has chosen her. My prayers and best wishes to out to her and the mans.

Thank you so much for this site. I just got done with the Discovery docuseries about this and I'm appalled at the misinformation that continues to go on. The adoptive parents are riddled with personality disorders and I can't believe they got away with it.

I also just wanted to say thank you very much for this blog! The way this case was portrayed by the Barnett's and by the media (by proxy) was initially confusing to me. But it's really not a complicated story after you parse through all of the noise and distractions.

After learning a little bit about the case, I did a Google search to find pictures of Natalia. That's how I arrived here. The photo template at the top of the page was enough to completely remove any crumb of doubt that she wasn't a small child. Since then, I've linked it many, many times. It is sad that these pictures have always been available yet the tabloids have conveniently ignored/ omitted them.

Once you see that photo evidence, everything else becomes easy. From that point on, it becomes more about determining motive.

But aside from the pictures, the evidence and explanations presented in this blog were also illuminating. Everything you've said makes sense, and it all lines up with all of the credible evidence that exists. Thanks again!
